Penny and James

Our paths crossed in 1991 on an NLP course, and that meeting was the beginning of a personal and professional partnership. During this time we helped found the Association for NLP Psychotherapy and Counselling Section (now NLPtCA), and were instrumental in getting NLP accepted by the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP).

In 1995 we met an internationally acclaimed therapist called David Grove—originator of Clean Language and pioneer in the therapeutic use of client-generated metaphor. We began a five-year modelling project which resulted in the publication of our book, Metaphors in Mind: Transformation through Symbolic Modelling. Now Symbolic Modelling is at the core of all we do.

We are authors, UKCP registered supervising psychotherapists, executive coaches and certified NLP trainers. We conduct modelling projects for organisations and are consultants to the Yale University Child Development Study. Over the last seven years we have trained Symbolic Modelling to professionals throughout Europe and North America, and have used Symbolic Modelling to facilitate a wide range of groups and teams: from the NASA Goddard Space Center in Washington DC to the Findhorn Spiritual Community in Scotland.

We were awarded Life Time Membership of The Canadian Association of NLP (CANLP) “in recognition of your valuable contribution”, and were appointed the first Honorary Certified Trainers of The International NLP Trainers Association (INLPTA) for a “significant contribution to the expansion of NLP”.

We have been part of Sue Knight’s training team for six years. It is an honour to support the values and integrity inherent in the NLP she brings to the world.
