Lying — Mimi — Thursday, June 03, 2004

How can you tell when a person is lying? And when a person tells you they love you but don't look you in the eye. What does this mean? He was this way with his exwife as well.

Sue's Answer

Dear Mimi
I was a bit hesitant to answer this question as in my experience there is so much more to this question than at first appears. I don't know if you are familiar with the concept of presuppositions but if you are then you may realise that by answering your question I would subscribe to the presupposition that you can always tell when someone is lying, that you would want to tell, that I could do that remotely, that there are conclusions that you might come to with the answer that I give, that might not be ecological. I would be curious to know more about the bigger issue before I answer.

Sincerely,
Sue Knight
