| General Semantics & NLP — Kay Rudisill — Sunday, November 30, 2003 |
Dear Sue, I am a doctoral student, and my dissertation is on communication and awareness (stated in a very broad sense), but what I am trying to find out is the connection/relationship between NLP and General Semantics. I think there is a very strong connection, but I wondered if you could direct me to where I might find more regarding this connection, or if you could explain it. Thank you kindly, Kay Rudisill |

Dear Kay, thank you for your question. It would help me to first understand what you mean by General Semantics and how you think there is a very strong connection and I can then add my thoughts to that on the basis of where you are coming from. I look forward to hearing more from you. Best wishes, Sue Knight |

Dear Sue, By General Semantics I mean the point that Alfred Korzybski (founder of General Semantics) emphasized about awareness, and how through the process of abstracting thoughts from an event or describing an object we tend to leave out many details. Hence each individual will derive at a different impression of the event due to their limited knowledge of it, and due to the fact that each individual compares new knowledge to past experiences. I am wondering if NLP came from or is derived from the principles of General Semantics. I am working on my dissertation based on awareness in communication, and through searches I have come upon General Semantics and NLP as two "forms of communication" that have a lot to do with awareness. So I was not sure, since General Semantics refers to Neuro Linguistic components, I thought maybe the one came from the other. Maybe you can help me to explain what are the origins of NLP, and who was the main person behind the concept - is it you who has brought this concept to fruition? I appreciate any help you can give me. I just want to be thorough in my research on my topic so that I don't leave anything out. I am using awareness as the key to better communication in my dissertation, testing its effectiveness through quantitative methods, and I am using mind/body awareness training through the tacit learning of a Aikido as the medium for increasing awareness. Thank you kindly, Kay Rudisill |

Dear Kay, now I understand. The founders of NLP were John Grinder (a linguist) and Richard Bandler (a mathematician and programmer) but both interested in and studying psychotherapy and very influenced and challenged by Gregory Bateson author of Towards an Ecology of Mind. Both John and Richard studied (modelled in NLP terms) what makes a difference between excelllent and good initially in therapy and drew on the work of many people including Milton Erickson, Fritz Perls, Virginia Satir and drew from their education too and all of this included work by Korzybski, Paul Watzlawik and many others. So you are right in that they are indeed connected. And my role in all of this? Well I aimed to pioneer the use of NLP in the workplace in the UK initially especially through my book NLP at Work. I hope that begins to answer your question but do feel free to follow up with more if you wish. Sincerely, Sue Knight |
