NLP in day-to-day life — Neelam — Friday, March 05, 2004

Hi Sue How does one make NLP a part of regular life? I am currently being trained in NLP and I am not able to directly apply the concepts in day-to-day life. Is is because it is too early?

Sue's Answer

Dear Neelam, a good question. Well NLP is very much about raising awareness and having increasing numbers of distinctions for the way in which you can discern what makes a difference. Therefore a very appropriate way to make NLP a part of everyday life is to give yourself something specific that you want to be aware of each day so for example you could do the following:-

Day 1 for a fixed period of time in the day (which might just be 10mins if that is all that is practical) be aware of the eye movements of the person that you are speaking to. You could even be more specific and say just notice when they look up.

Day 2 do the same but notice when someone looks down and pay attention to what they seem to be saying and doing when they do that

do the same with eye movements for the rest of the week or longer until you are noticing them without thinking

the next week

Day 1 take one language pattern for example 'generalisations such as 'always' or 'never' and pay attention to when you hear yourself or anyone else use this language pattern - that is all you need to do just notice

and each day do the same with another language pattern

and so on

I think that you will find that you start to be aware of how this information begins to influence the choices that you make and begins to make what you are aware of into your everyday life.

Let me know what you think and how that works for you if you try it.

Sincerely,

Sue Knight
